Miss Darcy is happy to announce that because The Virtuous Ward is just being launched, it is available for a limited time at $.99. It’s such an amusing story and was great fun to write so I’m thrilled to share it with you. All of you who are privy to the time period will recall that Lady Grassmere was prevailed upon to act as chaperone to Lord Maxwell Kampford’s ward, Amity. What a contretemps. The poor girl was totally unprepared for society. And then of course there was the dog.

Muffin was not a dog of noble birth or ancestry. He was to be perfectly honest a mutt. But Amity loved him as you will see.

“Come on, Muffin, you lazy slug. Wake up,” Amity muttered, elbowing her companion. When this tactic had little effect, she leaned over and whispered. “I’ll help you look for cats. And maybe even a rabbit.”

Thus tempted, Amity’s companion, an enormous brown dog of unknown and highly suspect origin yawned, his great tongue arching upward between neat rows of white teeth. He stretched all four legs and emitted a low rumbling moan before he turned his head toward his mistress. Muffin’s eyelids raised and he stared at Amity through soulful pools of brown.

“What a lump you are,” Amity said as she hugged her friend, nuzzling one floppy ear. “Ever since we got in the coach this morning you’ve been sleeping. Besides we’re almost there. Coachman said it would be another half hour.”

Thus reminded of their imminent arrival, Amity bit her lip, feeling the jolt of her accelerated heartbeat. She pushed the huge dog off her lap and brushed at the clumps of dog hair left behind. Then reaching up, she untied the blue ribbon that confined her hair at the nape of her neck. As usual a cloud of the bright red curls had escaped and were billowing around her cheeks. She raked her fingers through the shimmering mass of waist-length hair and retied the ribbon.

“My reticule! My gloves!” she wailed, searching the carriage.

She found the reticule at last beneath the plain poke bonnet, which she jammed on her head, but after a hurried hunt, could not find her mittens. She remembered removing them at the last stop and accepted the sad fact that she would have to arrive at her destination with bare hands. The reticule was dusty and she grasped the strings and smacked it against the squabs sending up clouds of dust. Muffin inhaled and sneezed so heartily that the movement propelled the dog upright, where he sat, eyes wide open and black nose aquiver. When Amity giggled at the dog’s expression, he looked so offended that she burst into a loud whoop of laughter. Thus Amity and Muffin arrived at Edgeworth.

Latest Scandalous Details

Miss Darcy along with Hester Kampford, The new president of the Daughters of the Sweet’s Racing Club (DSRC), has been going through the records of the original social club. So many fascinating tidbits have come to light. Hester who volunteers at the Moat House in Great Dunmow, Essex is one of the tireless chroniclers of the Regency period. She is descended from Lord Maxwell Kampford’s cousin Lady Hester Grassmere. All of you who are privy to the time period will recall that Lady Grassmere was prevailed upon to act as chaperone to Max’s ward, Amity. What a contretemps. The poor girl was totally unprepared for society. And then of course there was the dog.

In the exposé of Amity’s coming out to society in THE VIRTUOUS WARD it was obvious that the dog was ill suited to accompany a well brought up girl about town. Miss Darcy was quite appalled when she read of the flighty chit’s introduction to Lord Kampford.

“Come on, Muffin,” Amity said. As if annoyed, the dog pushed himself upright, his tail wagging in triumph at his accomplishment. He pressed his head against her knee, and Amity reached down to rub his neck. “Well, old friend, we don’t want to make a bad impression by being late.”

Thanking Emily for all her help, Amity opened the door and started out into the hall. Although Muffin swung his head to follow her movements, the rest of his body remained rooted to the floor. Returning, Amity grasped a handful of hair at his neck and kneed him toward the hall. Soulful brown eyes lifted to her face and then, accepting the inevitable, the dog padded beside her toward the stairs. Peter, the helpful footman, was on duty in the foyer and he indicated the double doors to the yellow salon. Two other footmen threw open the doors and Amity braced herself, her hand tight in Muffin’s fur for support.

When the doors opened, Max thought for a moment that he had been transported back in time. Framed by the carved lintel, Amity looked like an ancient warrior queen, her hand resting on some noble beast. Crystal blue eyes, flashing with courage and intelligence, shone out of her white face. Burnished curls crowned her raised head and fell in a cascade down her back. Max blinked and the magical vision was gone.

The girl hesitated in the doorway, her sparkling eyes flashing around the room in curiosity. Max was amazed that this was the same girl he had seen eleven years ago. His ward was not the pink and white debutante so much in fashion; she was a far more exotic creature. Her skin was too pale, her hair too red. Her mouth was too generous and her eyes too large. Each feature was discordant but together they blended in a harmony of perfection. He wondered what had happened to the scrawny, clumsy child.

Max coughed to remind the girl of her duty. She lowered her eyes and came to stand in front of him. He was surprised at her height; somehow he had expected she would be tiny. The top of her head came above his shoulder and he was six foot tall. He coughed once more and she extended her hand, dropping into a curtsy. As Max bowed over her hand, she bobbed back up, her head crashing into his chin with a jolt that rattled every tooth in his head.

“Blast!” Amity said, blinking through the tears of pain as she held the sides of her head. Looking up through her blurred vision she saw the pained look on the face of her guardian. And she had so wanted to make a good impression. Suddenly she was overcome by the humor of the situation.

As the pain of the blow began to wear off, Max glared at the clumsy girl. She had changed little since last he saw her. Visions of endless broken vases and knocked over tables flashed before his eyes. Her come out would be a debacle. He was much too old for such humiliation. He glowered down at the girl and watched the expressions flit across the too-open countenance: horror, embarrassment and then, of all things, amusement. When she started to laugh he was surprised at the soft lilting quality of her laughter.

“Only a harum-scarum girl would find amusement in such a social disaster.” Max tried to keep his lips from twitching but could not control the twinkle in his eyes.

“I am most sorry, your lordship.” Despite the sincerity of her words, Max noted the laughter in the crystal blue eyes. “Perhaps we might start over. Although I fear I must warn you I am not very expert.” To her credit, she controlled her expression and dipped into a slightly more graceful curtsy, peeking up at him through a fringe of lashes.

In the woman grown, Maxwell remembered the steady blue eyes of the child. Now there was a sheen of laugh-tears that gave them an uncanny brilliance and he found himself disappointed when she lowered her lids, hiding them from him. He shook his head, narrowing his eyes at the taking child.

“Welcome to Edgeworth, Endurance.”

“Thank you, my lord,” Amity replied. She liked his deep voice that was rich and melodious for all that his words were stilted. She willed herself to say something else but no words appeared in her mind so for once she remained silent. A snore interrupted her and she fought down another bout of giggles as she looked down at Muffin.

When Amity dipped into her curtsy, the traitorous dog took it as a sign that he could relax. He had flopped down in front of Max who was now trapped against the fireplace. Amity nudged the dog with the toe of her slipper knowing from experience that it was a useless gesture but hopeful nonetheless. As expected, Muffin merely snuffled in his sleep.

“I’m sorry about Muffin, my lord. He’s getting old and the journey tired him out. He’s not much used to travel,” Amity defended.

“Where did you get such a mangy beast?” Max asked, curious despite himself.

“He was abandoned on the roadside and near to death. He needed a home,” she finished as if it were the most natural of occurrences.

“It is of no consequence,” Max said waving his hand. With caution, he stepped over the recumbent figure and grasped Amity’s elbow. He turned her toward the other occupant in the room and his ward made another shaky curtsy. “Cousin Hester, this irrepressible child is my ward, Endurance Fraser. Lady Grassmere will be your chaperone during your stay here and during your come out. With any luck the three of us will survive the enterprise,” he amended drily.

Welcome Members of the DSRC!

It’s so exciting to welcome new members of the Daughters of the Sweet’s Racing Club! It was only recently that Miss Darcy discovered that she was a descendent of Jonathan Sweet, the founder of the Racing Club.  Although it came as a shock to be related to such a prominant historical figure, it did not surprise her since she has always felt she’d been born to the mauve, if not to the purple. The DSRC has been inactive as a social club for many years but once Miss Darcy discovered her esteemed lineage it became incumbant on her to try to resurrect the group, as we say from the ashes of history. It has taken a great deal of time to locate members of the Daughters of the Sweet’s Racing Club but those contacted are quite excited about the resurgance of a piece of social history.  Miss Darcy has accepted the position of Historian and Hester Kampford has agreed to be the President of the DSRC.  As you probably recall Hester is the descendent of Lord Maxwell Kampford one of the early members of Sweet’s. He was somewhat infamous at the time, being involved in the near disasterous debut of his ward Amity. As you are aware that whole affair was chronicled in an updated version of the story in the newly published book The Virtuous Ward. Once you’ve read the story feel free to ask further questions of the club.

Wow! What an exciting time!

I’m so excited! I’m planning to launch two new Regencies for the kindle this week and I’ve fallen in love with the covers! This is a continuation of the Sweet Deception Regencies. All the gentlemen in these books belong to Sweet’s Racing Club. They’ve known each other for years and their lives have intersected in many areas. It’s the women in their lives that have given them the most trouble. The journey to love is a complicated one for each of these men. Used to power and privilege, it baffles, infuriates and confounds them that a mere woman can so upset their well-controlled existence.

The Marriage Wager (Sweet Deception Regency #3)

Jena Christie had been kidnapped by a group of drunken gentlemen, married and deserted on her wedding night. Now her new husband, Lord Havenhurst was refusing to acknowledge their marriage! Convinced his new bride couldn’t hold her own among the ton, Dev proposed a wager that Jena dared not refuse. Neither of them, however, had planned on a wild card called LOVE!

The Scandalous Ward (Sweet Deception Regency #4)

Paxton Rutherford, Duke of Ruhaven, takes on the guardianship of Sir Leslie Lathrup, a young boy whose father has died in India. Five years later Pax is appalled to discover his young ward is really a girl and she is sufficiently compromised that only marriage will save both of their reputations. Can Leslie overcome his fury at her deception and win the love of her guardian?

Enjoy the new adventures of the men from Sweet’s Racing Club. The Marriage Wager and The Scandalous Ward are as much fun to read as The Five Kisses and The Masked Heart. Readers have been very kind in their reviews and I’ve been thrilled at the reception of the first two books. Visit my author page at Amazon to see the full list HERE.

Meet Jonathan Sweet

Although his place of birth is still under question, Jonathan Sweet was born in England in 1765 and died in 1834. The first record of Jonathan was found in a letter from the Earl of Elmore to a friend announcing he had promoted Sweet to head groom of his extensive breeding facility. Sweet had an unerring eye for good horseflesh and also a penchant for gambling. With this delightful skill set, he managed to amass a fortune over the years and moved to London where he acquired a site in St. James Street and opened a building that became Sweet’s Racing Club.

The Earl of Elmore and several friends had been meeting at a coffee house but gratefully moved to Sweet’s. The original club committee included the Earl of Elmore, the Duke of Ruhaven and several close friends. They limited the membership to forty and frequently travelled down to Newmarket to watch the racing. The younger set preferred the vitality of the social life in London and were grateful to have a place to entertain friends in the private parlors or to sleep off the rigors of hard partying in the rooms above.

This is a picture of White’s Club in London similar in looks to Sweet’s Racing Club. White’s was founded in 1693 and is still in existence today. Sweet’s was closed in 1834 on Jonathan Sweet’s death.

At Sweet’s one could gamble at Loo or have a quiet game of whist with friends. The club steward and the waiters were quietly efficient and were all addressed as George, according to rumor to honor Sweet’s brother who had died at an early age. The servants and other attendants wore all black with brass buttons imprinted with a horseshoe. Although the atmosphere was generally friendly there were times when betting was heavy that the tone became more tense. The youthful members competed heavily for the favors of both gentlewomen and ladies less discriminating. Wagers were placed on the outcomes of many of these matches.

Come and meet some of the members of this elite club and the women they love. HERE.

Who Is Jonathan Sweet?

It’s been mentioned at Almack’s and even at White’s that THE FIVE KISSES was the first book in the Sweet Regency Romance series. That’s all well and good as on dits go but just who is this bounder, Jonathon Sweet, and what does he have to do with these books. Much as my lips should be sealed, but seldom are, I could give you a hint. The whole story of THE MARRIAGE WAGER begins with Jonathan Sweet.

If it wasn’t for Jonathan Sweet, Jena Christie and her nanny would not have been kidnapped by a bunch of drunken noblemen on her way  home from her job as a seamstress at a London theater.

How good is your imagination? Send me your best guess as to who Jonathan Sweet is. Make your guess on the comment form at the bottom of the post and I’ll choose the most ingenious entry and send you a gift of THE MARRIAGE WAGER.

You’ll love this comedy of manners. Just like in the movie The Princess Bride this book has everything: there’s fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, miracles… Well OK so there’s not giants but there could have been.  And maybe no monsters but there’s no point in quibbling over small points. In any case, you’ll be laughing and crying and loving the chase at the end.

In two weeks you’ll have a chance to hear the whole story.

Wow What a Debut!

An author couldn’t ask for a better week. Thanks to the support of a ton of people the debut of The Five Kisses (Sweet Deception Regency #1) couldn’t have been more spectacular. I’ve been celebrating with tea and sticky buns in the drawing room since the promotion started. So many people left their calling cards that my butler threatened to quit. As if I’d let him. Just check what the fans did.  #4 in the Top 100 Free!

The betting book at Sweet’s Racing Club was overflowing and the ton was literally taken by storm.  It’s enough to give me the vapors since this is just the beginning of the series.  I hope all of you have enjoyed reading The Five Kisses and don’t forget to get the next one, The Masked Heart (Sweet Deception Regency #2) which is available on Amazon now. Now  off with you to get your copy today!

Buy or download a sample by clicking HERE.

The world of the theater in Regency times.  Wear your domino and cape so that no one will recognize you. As one reader said, “This story sealed the deal for me as a fan. The Masked Heart has the same sharp writing as The Five Kisses and another plot that kept me reading it straight through. The humor and tenderness give the book heart while authentic details and great sexual tension make for a great read. Not only do you learn about theater but watch as Blaine disguises herself as different characters to save her family from disaster. Drew is a true hero!” It’s enough to give me palpitations.
