Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from Karla Darcy!

Miss Darcy hopes you all will have a very merry Christmas and a safe and healthy New Year. She loves all the holiday traditions associated with Christmas, don’t you? In Regency times it was always exciting when the Kissing Bough was hung. It’s similar today to the hanging of mistletoe. Miss Darcy can remember in her younger days how her heart would pound with anticipation that she might earn a kiss and also pound with fear that no one would step forward to claim one. Ah pray forgive Miss Darcy for launching into a moment of nostalgia. In our home the kissing bough was suspended in the center of the hallway. Apples tied to red satin ribbons dangled from a circle of rosemary. Mistletoe was nestled in the heart of the greenery and the shiny apples swayed, caught in the errant draughts of the hallway. Such lovely memories.

In Twitter, nine year old Gillian invites her neighbor Chad to the Christmas party at her home. Here’s a quick peek at the kissing bough in this romantic story:
*   *   *   *   *   *   *

Final FiveKissesChad did come to the Christmas party and, despite the fact he was heir to the Earl of Elmore, he fit in well with the other guests. While the adults congregated in the drawing room, the children were permitted to play games in the kitchen and the back parlor, with occasional forays into the dining room for sustenance.

The party wore on, becoming less formal. Chad and Gillian, along with the other children, took turns hiding behind the draperies in the foyer to watch as the ladies were kissed beneath the mistletoe. When the squire’s wife took over the piano and began to pound out “Bernie Bough”, the adults returned to the drawing room, much to the children’s disappointment.

“Just when things were getting interesting,” Chad said.

“There’s still one apple left,” Gillian said, staring up at the kissing bough.

“Go on, Gilly!” someone shouted. “Stand under it and pay the forfeit.”

Gillian hesitated. It was not that she was reluctant. She’d had her eye on the apples all evening and felt one kiss was a small price to pay for her favorite fruit. However she’d never been kissed before and was not eager for the other children to discover her ignorance.

Stalling for time, she said, “There is no one who can reach the apple.”

There were giggles and a rustle of movement among the children. Gillian squirmed in embarrassment, wondering how she could get out of the awkward situation. Suddenly Chad stepped forward.

“I can reach the apple,” he said. His voice cracked on the words but he winked to indicate he was quite willing to save her as she had saved him a few days earlier.

Gillian relaxed, determined to enter into the spirit of the game. With exaggerated gestures, she sashayed across the hall, pantomiming the simpering young women she had watched earlier. She flipped her curls with one languid hand and fluttered her eyelashes outrageously in Chad’s direction.

He played along, acting the part of the amorous gallant. Reaching into his pocket he pulled out a snowy white handkerchief. He fluttered it under his nose then made an elegant leg, sweeping the hand holding the handkerchief close to the floor. He straightened up, leaned forward and kissed her with a resounding smack. On tiptoes he reached up and unfastened the apple which was presented to her with great ceremony, amid the cheers and applause of the other children and some of the adults who had come to investigate the cause of such hilarity.

Everyone said it was the greatest fun, almost like watching a play. Gillian laughed along with Chad and it was only later when she was tucked up in bed that she had time to think about the evening. Her first kiss had been much different than she had expected. She was surprised that Chad’s lips had been so warm and firm. More surprising yet was the funny, shivery feeling she had in the pit of her stomach when he kissed her. It was like falling, a curious but not unpleasant sensation.

Karla Darcy Announces the Holiday Blog Hop

Miss Darcy was partying with the Daughters of Sweet’s Racing Club at their Christmas Gala. It was great fun and she managed to win at whist. Although we’ve tried over the years to copy some of the traditions of  (a social club during Regency times where both sexes could mingle) we decided that tea and lemonade were not appropriate for the holiday party. Wine was chosen as the beverage of choice over the objections of Alicia Weathersfield, our illustrious president. Instead of thinly sliced bread and butter and pound cake we opted for a lively cheddar, crackers and HERE. Several of us suggested cherry tarts since they were the favorites of Devereaux Havenhurst in The Marriage Wager.

Facebook

You will all remember the contretemps surrounding his marriage. He and several friends while deep in their cups (drunk) kidnapped an innocent young girl believeing she was an actress and Dev married her. On sober reflection he tried to get out of the marriage by challenging her to a wager. She must run his household by the same standards of society that he was used to. In order to win the wager Dev fired all the servants and left his wife Jena to hire a scurrilous looking crew of servants. In this excerpt Dev has just returned home for the first time since the wager was made and Jena has invited him to partake of asumptious tray of food:

*   *   *   *   *   *   *

“Please help yourself, milord,” Jena said. “I believe Cook sent along some cucumber sandwiches as well as the sweets.”

“Dare I ask what idiosyncrasies Cook possesses?” Dev drawled. “A penchant for arsenic? Or is she content with the common rat poisons?”

“Truly, milord, she is nothing out of the way. She is a positive miracle worker with pastries and her fish course would make Prinny weak with envy. You will find no fault with her sauces and I promise you her pheasant presentation is something to behold. Of course, she is blind in one eye,” Jena said, her eyes twinkling as Dev’s hand hovered over the tray of food. “But before you ask how, I warn you the word ‘gouged’ might dampen your appetite.”

The American Bride! A Proxy Marriage? Miss Darcy Cries Fustian!

Miss Darcy has been trying to cut through the gossip concerning Lord Wilton’s proxy marriage to an American. Most would say, “What good can come of such a misalliance?” Learn the true story in The American Bride.

Fustian! Miss Darcy was quite startled when she read that the Duchess of Landglower herself had proposed a shocking scheme. Excerpt from The American Bride:

*******************

“Cara, your father had your best interests at heart. He could have married you to anyone but I think he chose well. Lord Wilton is young and very handsome. I’m sure he has many fine qualities.”

Sunk in her own despair Cara failed to note the uncertainty of the Duchess’ appraisal.

“Who knows? Given time you may grow to love him.”

“But, Grandmother, that’s just the point. I don’t have any time. We’re already married. He’ll never give me time to know him. We shall be introduced and then he’ll have the right to do with me whatever he wants.”

The American BrideThe older woman could not dismiss the note of distress in the girl’s voice nor the blushing agony in her face. She knew the girl was correct.

The things she had heard about Wilton left her in little doubt that he would immediately bed the beautiful girl. Even at her advanced age she chafed at her granddaughter’s predicament.

The Duchess left her chair and rummaged in the pigeonholes of an inlaid rosewood desk. Pulling out a letter she gave a sigh of satisfaction and returned to her chair. She squinted at the pages for several minutes and then smiled at the curious girl.

“Lady Trehune always keeps me abreast of the latest gossip. Can’t understand why anyone would tell her anything in confidence because before you could get out the door Netty would have told at least three people. At any rate she has her uses when you need to know anything about the ton.”

“She wrote you about Lord Wilton?”

“Indirectly,” the Duchess said, smiling at her granddaughter’s eagerness. “About three years ago Lord Wilton’s brother and his wife were killed in a carriage accident.

There were two children and they are wards of Wilton. They live at his country estate and, according to my addlepated friend Netty, they are in need of a governess.

Knowing of your proxy marriage she was delighted to inform me that their last governess left under some sort of a cloud.”

“You mean that I could go there as a governess? Oh, grandmother, what a lark!”

The girl laughed deeply, much to her grandmother’s approval. She was a fine healthy animal who seemed to appreciate a good joke. No missish girl, this one, nodded the Duchess.

“Do you think you could carry it off?” Liela inquired.

“I had a perfectly awful governess after Mother died. Madame Regenard was an absolute dragon.” She jumped to her feet and paced across the carpeting.

“Should I be French? I can speak it perfectly, even though my accent is a bit awkward,”

“No, child,” the Duchess drawled. “No one would ever take you for anything but an American.”

*******************

Miss Darcy is well aware that such a disguise could place this innocent girl in considerable danger. Not only her reputation but her very virtue would be at risk.

In Downton Abbey, the American bride did save the estate but when the heir died her money was tied to that very estate.

There’s more at stake here than financial disaster. Like in Pride and Prejudice, tittle-tattle abounds but the full account in The American Bride is so romantic.
